Ask and it Will be Given to You (Matthew 7.7)

How many of us have the perfect job, stay in a nice neighbourhood, have good friends even have a good enough reliable car? The Bible verse above is a good one to remember. When you ask God what you need, it will be given to you. Ask God to help you make the right decisions in life, in everything that you need. Life is full of decision making and when we bring God into our lives and ask him to help us we will become successful.

How do we ask God for what we need in life?

We all have to prepare for some big event during our lifetime e.g. a sport event, giving a talk, buying a new house, getting married. You spend a lot of time practicing, rehearsing, going over your notes, meeting up with people, and when you are looking to buy a new house or car you drive around to look at show houses or visit car dealers, Even looking to find a new job you first look at ads on the recruitment websites or newspapers, then go for interviews. All of these take time and effort from your side.

When we decide what we need, what our priorities are, we prepare. We decide what we want; we make notes, write down a list, and do research. We need to do the same when asking God to help us with something. Think what you want to ask God for, and then start by making a detailed list. God needs details of what we want, when we want it, and how we want it:

  • Be very specific in what you need.
  • Give God all the details – even the tiniest of details.
  • Put all of your dreams and thoughts in your heart. God wants to see that you are sincere.
  • Write a letter to God, then pray and show God the letter and ask Him to help you. Leave the letter on your bedside table. Meditate on your request.
  • Be honest with God when giving Him the details.
  • Whatever you ask God be specific like for example:

i.            You are looking for a new job; name the area you want to work in and type of job you are looking for.

ii.            You want to buy a new car; give God the details of the type of you are looking for, the colour and even the specifications of the car.

iii.            You are lonely and want to find someone to share your life with. Ask God for a partner that can fulfill your dreams, your “other half”. Even be specific about looks and characteristics. God knows what we need.

  • Believe that God will give you what you ask for.
  • Then leave it to God to answer your prayers.

We cannot expect God to give us something without any effort from our side. If you are looking for a new job, you need to go and search the web, look up ads in the newspaper etc. or if you want to get married, you need to go out and meet people. You cannot be a guitar player if you do not practise.

Work on your goals and dreams. Ask God for help and inspiration along the way, but do your part.

We often think that we are not good enough to have something special, but in God’s eyes we are all special to Him. He wants us all to have the best; it is up to us to ask Him. If you know that you are good enough to receive only the best, God will give it to you.

Young people, before you get married, ask God to send you the right partner. Someone that can fulfil you, be your best friend and walk a spiritual path with you. So often a marriage fails because we have chosen the wrong partner. Marriage is sacred and often we do not realise what we need from each other or have to give in return. When you are ready to have children, ask God to bless your marriage with children. Children are a big responsibility and we need to be ready to look after them, nurture them. If you do not have the time, or the resources to bring them up in a good healthy family, the whole family suffers in the end.

We very often ask God for things but do we thank Him afterwards.  Remember to thank God for what He has given. Even for small gifts.
